A last-minute personalised storybook gift

A birthday tomorrow does not leave much room for shipping. A downloadable storybook can work, if you check the details before you buy.

1. Check when the complete Book arrives

A digital gift avoids shipping, but it can still take time to make. Check whether you receive a finished PDF immediately or wait for a made-to-order file.

A free preview is not the whole Book. Look for a clear delivery estimate, and check whether payment confirmation or approval comes first. Leave time to open the file before you promise a bedtime reading.

2. Get the Hero’s details right

Write the child’s name exactly as their family spells it. Check accents, age and any dedication before paying. A favourite animal, hobby or family pet can make the Story feel personal without a long biography.

If you are buying from far away, ask the parent about the child’s current favourites. A description of their look may be enough; a photo should not be an automatic requirement. Check any photo’s use and deletion policy before uploading it.

3. Plan a screen-reading gift first

A tablet or laptop can turn a PDF into a shared bedtime reading without a printer. Save the file locally, open it, and check that the words are readable at a comfortable size.

For a gift, add a short personal message when you send it. Tell the recipient who the Book is for and how to open it. Keep a saved copy so a lost email does not mean a lost present.

4. Test printing before promising a paper Book

Check the file’s paper size against your printer: A4 and US Letter are not the same. Look for instructions explaining whether each PDF page is one page or a two-page spread.

Print one sheet first. Check cropping, readable text, colour and margins before using more ink. Duplex flip settings depend on the layout; follow the file’s instructions rather than guessing.

Use paper your printer supports, and allow time for drying and assembly. A booklet may need a separate printing layout. If printing goes wrong, read the saved PDF together and make the paper version later.

5. Check sharing and corrections

Confirm that the seller permits sending the PDF to family or printing a gift copy. Buying a file does not automatically allow public posting, resale or classroom distribution.

Check how spelling mistakes or an unsuitable picture can be corrected. Read the refund policy before paying, especially if approval makes the order final. Check the delivery email address, and look in spam if the expected message is missing.

If the gift is needed tonight

Choose a finished file you can open now, rather than an uncertain delivery promise. If none is ready, write a dedication inside an existing picture book and read it together.

For a future DLP Book, see the planned steps and explore the sample first.
